Newton is the county seat of Catawba County and Conover's neighbor to the south. The two cities share a border, the Newton-Conover City Schools and the Observer News Enterprise, which has covered both since 1879. If you run a business in Newton, this page is for you.
A county-seat town
Newton was established in 1845, three years after Catawba County was formed from Lincoln County, and incorporated in 1855. It takes its name from Isaac Newton Wilson, whose father Nathaniel Wilson introduced the bill that created the county. The 1924 Catawba County Courthouse now houses the Catawba County Museum of History, and the downtown historic district and the North Main Avenue historic district are both on the National Register. The 2020 census counted 13,148 people in the city.
